As a P4A coaches will assigned ratings for members and non-members signed up on Court Reserve based on official rating clinic or observed during playing time. Our ratings are based on the following standards:

3.0: Ability to maintain basic rally relying on medium paced forehand with little direction and avoiding other shots; learning proper court positioning.3.5: Ability to maintain rallies relying on controlled forehand and volley while developing consistency using 3rd shot drop and backhand; understands court positioning including moving quickly towards non-volley zone (NVZ) when opportunity is there
4.0+: Uses wide variety of shots strategically with appropriate depth and control but working on high level of consistency for advanced shots. Is able to move as a team and able to change direction in an offensive manner.

Q: Why did Pickleball4ALL assign ratings?
In order to maintain a balance of fun but competitive games, we are assigning ratings to players in quarter-point ranges. This system enables a consistent experience for players at our events such as Rack & Play, leagues, etc.
Q: How were these ratings determined?
The USAPA skill rating definitions were used as a guide to assign ratings.
Our guidelines are summarized below:
1.0-2.0: This player is starting to play pickleball and has no other sports background. Minimal understanding of the rules of the game.
2.5: This player has limited experience. Can sustain a short rally with players of equal ability.
3.0: Ability to maintain basic rally relying on medium paced forehand with little direction and avoiding other shots; learning proper court positioning.
3.5: Ability to maintain rallies relying on controlled forehand and volley while developing consistency using 3rd shot drop and backhand; understands court positioning including movement quickly towards non-volley zone (NVZ) when opportunity is there.
4.0+: Uses wide variety of shots strategically with appropriate depth and control but working on high level of consistency for advanced shots. Is able to move as a team and able to change direction in an offensive manner.Players were assigned a rating based on a formal evaluation or observed play from our coaches. In the future, further refinement may be done for the 4.0+ level.
Q: Do all members and non-members have an assigned rating?
We assigned ratings to the majority of members and frequent non-members, but not all players have a rating yet. If the coaches were not familiar with an individual’s recent level of play, a level was not assigned but over time, skill ratings will be assigned. If a player has not been assigned a rating but would like to be evaluated, please contact the club to set up an evaluation. If certain non-members play at the club frequently, appropriate ratings were assigned based on observed gameplay.
Q: Can these ratings change over time?
Absolutely. We know many players are working hard to improve their game and ratings can change within a short period of time. If you believe your rating has improved, please talk to one of the coaches to determine the best way to evaluate your improvement.
Q: Will there be opportunities for me to play with different levels?
Our Rack&Play scheduling is being updated to have certain time slots with a tight skill rating range, but there will also be time slots with a wider rating range, allowing players to play with higher levels.
Q: Was age and gender considered in determining rating?
Similar to DUPR, age and gender were not explicitly accounted for.
Q: How does this compare to my DUPR rating?
If a player has enough games for a credible DUPR and it differs from the assigned rating, please reach out to the club or one of the coaches.
Q: Will I be restricted from signing up for Rack & Play and other events outside of my assigned skill range?
We generally expect players to sign up for events appropriate for their skill level, but players can occasionally choose to play at a lower level assuming they adjust their level of play. Events may have a restriction in Court Reserve applied based on skill level in the future.
Q: How does this rating compare with other ratings from other clubs?
We understand other clubs may have their own rating system but we are using the USAPA definitions as our guide to enable a consistent experience. If you would like to discuss your rating, please reach out to the club or talk to one of the coaches.
